We Don't Need Writing for Engineering
Many Engineering students in high school would agree that English isn't an important in their career. I also agreed to this way of thinking that it’s worthless, but I was wrong. This research paper should be used to decrease this way of thought of high school students. I will look for engineering students in my old high school to speak about the importance of English. The following resources I’ve used are Srilasi, Khan & Iqbal, and Monash University. These authors support my following construct that English is key to receive your degree/career. My interviewees Jorge Vidal and William Flores go into detail on how English has impacted them in receiving and acquiring jobs as an engineering. English is important to interact with fellow customers/boss since it’s important to explain current projects or applying for a job. Another point is that it’s required to move through your degree to pass all the classes required to receive the Engineering degree. Last key point is creating reports to show what adjustment could be made to a current project for further details.
When it comes to projects we have to explain anything that might look suspicious since if any mistakes are made cause the engineer to pay for those mistakes out of his pocket. As Engineers we need to elaborate on our drawings for whoever is reading them can understand what has to be made to create the project. When creating a project we need to write explanations on what has to be done to fit or adjust the mentally of a customer. When we apply for a job we need to understand that we must elaborate on what our future bosses ask us. For speech we have to know how to speak correctly and create a mini script to improve the chances of getting hired. Since for applying to jobs nowadays we are required to speak and write English with very high understanding. In High school students disagree with this mentally they say “Math” is more important than English and it shouldn’t be taught in their degrees. Having this mentally can be very dangerous in their career path it can lead them to be unprepared and it can give them an initiative to drop out.
When we are filling out an application for any job we must describe the work we have done prior to applying. If your English is above than others it can increase the monetary reward will increase every time you speak to a customer or boss. This requires to show examples of your work explaining in detail that you understand how to read projects and create one. When interviewing William Flores, he stated that “when applying for jobs they ask if you can explain/understand what your project portrays”. So we can see that English is an important factor when we are pursuing our degree in any engineering. When creating a project we must take into account that we are needed to point out certain points regarding texture or how it has fall into place. We don’t just need Math since it will play a big part but you won’t succeed if we can’t master writing since it plays a big role when finishing off the project in a presentable manner.
As an engineer technical writing will be our best friend when going through our classes in college since we are required to write reports for our engineering classes. Writing in college is the paddle for your boat since you need it to move forward in your degree. As “Voice of Engineers” explains “At times he is supposed to narrate writing specification, documentation, technical reports, feasibility reports and grant approvals”(Khan&Iqbal). We can see that writing will be guiding us through our college path to graduating. In some of our engineering courses it will require for us students to have a proper English speaking/writing skills requiring us to create a mini script knowing what is needed to be explained in any project that is created. In “Effective Writing skills for Engineering Students” states “Written communication is vital for Engineering Students, since not only text, but also calculations, plots and figures which are to be communicated in documents such as lab reports, progress reports, user manuals and journal articles”(Srilasi). This clearly shows that us that not just in speaking but in our other courses they are going to require us to write reports. In order to pass our classes to be one step closer to receiving our so long wanted degree. It won’t be an easy task since we are required to improve our writing skills in order to prevail out of other Engineers pursuing the same position. By having very good math skills won’t get you the degree since what is required to succeed in this field is using Writing with math creating a very powerful tool that not much students during college know off.
When interviewing Jorge Vidal he stated that “When I was a student in college I was required to write reports and proposals to my customers”. He is currently a Civil Engineering Professor teaching Engineering Graphics explained that it wasn’t just “math”. We can see that people that have gone through the courses required that they are required to know that English is a valuable asset. So the myth of not needed writing is decreasing since math isn’t the only subject you will need to succeed in the engineering field. Creating portfolios is also an important because Engineers need to record everything since it’s what represents the engineers in the long run. Without this portfolios they more than likely won’t be able to succeed in the college path since it’s required to proceed through the classes. The cover page of a portfolio must be created in the beginning of our college path and slowly improve it as the years go by. The cover page contains all the information of the engineer and a long explanations of the engineer’s works over the years.
Projects the most important part of our careers since it’s what makes us or breaks us. We simply can’t afford to make a mistake since it’s going to affect us in way that whatever mistake is made without proper explanation it will come out the engineer’s pocket. Explanations in projects can sound as a little thing by without proper English/writing the project will cause many setbacks that could have been avoided by writing proper English.  A valid explanation of how a certain thing should be made or what is required to make it can cost money and simply can’t happen. Going into detail is necessary to have a successful build without writing them can cause setback giving the engineer bad reviews on his work. Writing in projects can completely destroy your project since it’s informal and not presentable. Whenever we go to survey the land we need to write extensive notes explaining what must be done to the project to achieve the final project. Writing proper English in notes can make your life a lot simpler since once presented to your boss he will understand what is trying to be given to him. Moving the job a lot faster with approval of the changes that have to be made to achieve the final project.
In other words English simply can’t be ignored since it’s a valuable asset in our careers causing students to drop out since they rent prepared with the challenges that English brings. So the myth that most high school students must be decrease since it will lead them to discourage English in their later years and not reaching their goal of becoming an Engineer. When applying for a new job we must go into that interviewing knowing what we need to say explaining everything in detail knowing what we have done in the past years in projects. Whenever we go through college we must be ready to use writing in various occasions for reports, surveys, and any English classes that require essays. Using in writing in an engineering progress can be a difficult path but knowing English can be the ones that guides you besides math. Whenever we make projects we can’t forgot to explain the main features that are required and what is required to reach that state in the plan. A solution that can fix this myth of not needing English in an engineering degree is by taking a former engineers explain their plans into detail. Showing that English is an important figure to create a project can lead the students to focus their attention in the English classes. Also displaying their work from college required to succeed their degree.
